This BMI calculator for adolescents and children is different in comparison to the adult version. While it takes into account weight and height, it also uses gender and age. This is because female and male weight and height change with growth and development. For children, BMI is expressed as an percentile when compared with other children who are the same age and gender

The path to better health

If your BMI indicates that you're overweight or obese you can reduce the BMI through losing weight. This can be achieved by following the standard weight loss tips, such as:

  • Eating healthy. Choose lean meats, fruits, vegetables, along with whole-grain grains. Cut down on alcohol, sugar food items that are processed, sodas and juices. Consume fewer calories.
  • Exercising regularly.This includes cardio and weight-bearing exercises to build muscles and shed fat. This can help in controlling belly fat. Belly fat increases the risk of developing certain diseases. Always consult your physician prior to beginning any exercise routine.
  • Being mindful of portion control. Do not eat too much during meals and snacks.

Things to take into consideration

If your BMI indicates you're overweight or fat, you may be at risk of developing certain health conditions. These include diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and some cancers. BMI isn't a way to identify the severity of disease. However, it's an important marker that should be a reason to talk with your physician about the best way to lose weight, and reduce BMI.
